How to Make Your Own Perfume with Fragrance Oils
Making your own perfume sounds intimidating, but with a few fragrance oils and some patience, it's one of the most rewarding creative projects you can do at home. Here's a straightforward method to get started.
What you'll need
- 2–3 Adia fragrance oils (your chosen scents)
- A small glass bottle (10–15ml)
- A carrier oil (jojoba is ideal — odorless and skin-safe)
- A dropper or pipette
- A notebook to record your ratios
Understand the fragrance pyramid
Classic perfumery uses three layers:
- Top notes — what you smell first (light, fresh, citrus-forward)
- Heart notes — the core character (floral, spicy, herbal)
- Base notes — the lasting foundation (woody, musky, resinous)
A balanced blend typically uses roughly 30% top, 50% heart, and 20% base notes.
A starter blend to try
Combine Mist of Paradise (top/heart) with Egyptian Amber (heart/base) and Blackstone (base). Start with a 3:2:1 ratio, test on skin, and adjust from there.
The process
- Add your base note drops first, then heart, then top.
- Fill the remainder of the bottle with your carrier oil.
- Cap and gently roll (don’t shake) to combine.
- Let it rest for 48 hours before wearing — the scent will deepen and harmonize.
